In physics any given object may have a “potential” energy, this potential is considered stored, it can be potential due to gravity, combustibility, or stored energy like that in a spring or bow. I have found that people from all walks of life also have a “potential” energy. Some are born into families with legacies of great faith, others into families of great or little financial wealth, some into generations marked by despair, and others marked by struggle and pain. All of these examples, all of these lives begin with momentum of sorts and all with their own given potential. The potential on my heart today though is not the kind of natural beginnings or the kind that comes without a cost.
When I was a child I had been taught that success was capable if I wanted it enough, if I put in the work. As I have matured, I believe I have come to the conclusion that it is not enough to just want it or put in all the work I possibly can. To be honest some individuals in this life are born “better” off than others when it comes to the potential success in business, athletics, relationships, and health. Let that sink in for a second. That’s not fair right? There are plenty of people in this world who are dealt a hand in life that isn’t fair. Sex trafficking, murder, divorce, rape, theft, anger, abuse, torture, pain, hunger, intolerance, genocide, cancer, motherless and fatherless children, war, all tilt the scale, all are unfair to those who live through it, walk in it daily, and to anyone who overcomes it.
Heaven paid the price to tilt the scale back in the favor for humanity, for your neighbor, for your marriage, for your children, for your parents, for you! Jesus came to give us back that potential. The potential of heaven, now what does that look like? It changes the hearts of kings, brings purity to a prostitute, nobility to a thief, brings sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf and hope to the hopeless. However, potential is just that unless another force acts upon it. Looking at my own children I see “potential” but unless I act as an outside force much of that potential may never be seen. A rock is said to have potential if it is on a hill, but if someone were to say pick up the rock and carry it to a higher spot on that same hill, its potential would be said to have increased, its worth, its ability to do “work” would be greater. Our community is full of people that need a “force” in their life to help realize their potential, to have their potential increased, to be elevated, carried from one point to a higher one. That takes energy, it takes time, and I can’t promise you that if you become involved that any single act will be worth it.
What I can tell you is that the journey is worth it. Knowing Jesus and falling in love with his passions, knowing his heart and seeing hope in what the world deems as hopeless, becoming unoffendable because you know the potential of those who would “offend”…that is worth every minute. To know him, to become like him, to love relentlessly, to give without expectation. That is worth it all. I desire to lay down my life to see others reach their potential. I desire to give my finances knowing it will take me longer to “climb” the hill myself, all to see the potential of heaven released. Is it worth it if in all my encounters only one person would say yes and take the same path? I say that that potential is worth it all. God did it for me, he did it for you, he gave his only begotten son that whosever would believe in him would not perish but have ever lasting life (John 3:16). He gave us an outside force, the Holy Spirit, to work within us to help us release that potential, to stir up the gifts God has with us, and to stir up the gifts in those around us. He gave us fellow man to encourage and partner with in life should we be obedient to his command of going and making disciples. Yet, in this we also have our free will. You have a choice to be a source of potential energy sitting high like a rock on a hill all the days of your life, or to begin to powerfully choose to take even the tiniest of steps, to become influenced by Jesus’s perfect love and in faith descend down the hill…increasing in velocity and force… a kinetic powerhouse releasing the potential of heaven.
