Being Distracted

by Alger Julson on April 12, 2019

How easily distracted are you? What distracts you the most? Do you get consumed with what is happening around the world, our nation, our state and communities? Or are you allowing God to consume you?

Being distracted is not fun. Your mind has a tendency to keep spinning from one thing to another until it is hard to see yourself having any direction. Battling the distraction keeps you from moving forward in the direction God has for your life. Eventually it gets so bad that you want to pull back from everything and go hide and stay in the corner of your own little world. You just want to be left alone. You can turn inward, become selfish and not focus on anything other than yourself.

There are a lot things going on in this world to keep a person distracted. Some distractions are the abortion issue, natural disasters locally, nationally and globally; wars and rumors of war; political corruption scandals; gender and racial issues; school shootings and bullying. There are so many tragic issues that we cannot keep up or list them all.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days [a]perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, [b]unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

If we are not careful all these worldly distractions can consume us. We will open a door of fear to enter into our lives and lose hope if we allow it to. To combat this fear we need to realize that we have been in perfect love according to:

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Distractions are everywhere you look. It is not only things that are happening around the world but it can also be personal distractions that keep you away from the things of the Lord. What about the TV? That is a major one for me. I can get so consumed with the TV that my wife can ask me something and I am totally oblivious what she asking me. I am working on that. Another area that distracts me is that I think I always need to work with my hands or I need something to do; especially when comes to things that need to be done outside. When I am seeking the Lord, my mind wonders to the things I could be doing outside.

To overcome these struggles there needs to be a determination every morning to welcome Him into my day and begin thanking Him for what He has done and provided for me and my family.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [b]direct your paths.

As we make a determination to overcome distractions and devote ourselves to seek Him in all situations we will see that God will bring revival into homes and communities. I know personally I want to see revival in my life and my family. God is looking for a people who stand and decree as stated in:

Joshua 24: As for me and my house we will serve the Lord!!!!!!

Let us all stand and make the decree as Joshua did.
